OS X 10.4 Network Performance in Dumper

Filed under: Apple, Tech — rshangle @ 2:35 pm

Since upgrading to 10.4 (or more specifically, 10.4.1), my broadband (cable) performance has been a) 10x slower and b) incredibly unreliable.

I’ve identified this to impact every IP-based app on the system, including:

a) ncftp (which I’ve updated to 3.1.9

b) Safari (about 60% of attempts to connect to page, on any given instance, fail with “server not found”)

c) CyberDuck

d) iChat

e) list continues

After a week or two (or four) of giving my crap cable provider the non-benefit of the doubt (assuming it’s been their service or lack therof), I’m drilling down and making resolving this my top priority. the loss of the functionality has had a dramatic negative Quality of Life impact.

Adding insult to injury, my mom has experienced the same issues since I upgraded her to 10.4.2 across the board, to the level that I’m scheduled to go over there and start replacing equipment.

I attempted the turn-off-IPv6 hack listed on Maniacal Rage, which so far hasn’t helped me, but may help others in a similar boat.

Stay tuned… if you can get to this page.

    Update 1:

Ok… well I’ve certainly never said the words “I’m not a complete f***ing idiot”.

Although the networking performance in 10.4 _DOES_ suck… replacing my cable modem (a creaking Toshiba 1100). which experienced an acute failure at around 9AM this morning. with a new Linksys WCG200 seems to have at least restored a _reliable_ network connection.

Updates to continue. We’ll see how it performs.

If the last weeks of pain have been simply due to a downward spiraling cable modem… I’ll feel pretty stupid. But it won’t be the first time (I’ve felt stupid…)

After four days, I’d say the acute network reliability issues were related to my failing cable modem.

Interestingly, my upbound and downbound bandwidth has reached a pleasurable equilibrium never before seen. Before the loss of functionality a month or so ago, I was routinely experiencing 30-40K up vs. 240K down. Now I get 140K up and down, concurrent.

If the situation persists another week, it’s possible that I may post something indicating I was slightly over-harsh re: OS X 10.4 network performance, but I wouldn’t count on it. Mostly because all other things re: 10.4 are in the shite-er.
